The IBM 3116 Page Printer Models are 16 page per minute (PPM) printers providing a print solution for up to four simultaneous user groups: IBM Host (AS/400* or System/370*, System/390*), Direct LAN Attach (Token-ring or Ethernet), ASCII PC Parallel attached workstations, and ASCII Serial RS-232/422 attached workstations. All 3116 Page Printers include a standard SCS data stream coaxial or twinaxial interface for attachment to IBM host systems. IPDS data stream capability is optional. Also, all 3116 printers include a standard PC Parallel interface, Serial RS-232/422 interface, and a slot for Internal Network Adapters.

In 1/96, the IBM 3116 printer was upgraded to a new ASCII micro-code level. The IBM 3116 printers with the new code level can be identified by the code level that is on the print menus printout (MENUS/TESTS MENUS/PRINT MENUS). After printing this one page sample, the base printer micro-code level can be identified. In the bottom right hand side of the page, the "Base" code level is shown. If the "Base" is 50.56 or higher, then the printer has the enhancements already installed. The new code level provides the following enhancements:

    • Internal processing performance increase for PCL applications
    • Multiple copy collation in the printer
    • Separator sheets between jobs, copies, or pages
    • Configurable input buffers
    • Automated network installation of drivers and utilities via MarkVision
A Software Upgrade Kit can be purchased via RPQ 8B4454 to add the above function to older IBM 3116 printers. This RPQ is customer installable.

    Printer Memory
    Standard: 4MB Model 001

    (1) Memory Options: 2MB, 4MB, 8MB, 16MB, and 32MB (Max. of 64MB)
    (PCL and PostScript only)
    (2) Flash Memory Options: 2MB, and 4MB flash memory for storing
    PCL and PostScript resources
    (3) There is one IPDS memory slot available with the IPDS feature.
When the IPDS feature is ordered, it comes with 2 MB of memory
standard. This memory can be increased by ordering a 4 MB or
8 MB option. A change to the physical memory media type used
on the IPDS feature was phased in around the Jan/96 time frame.
New machine orders requiring additional IPDS memory should use
Feature Code 4040 or 4050. MES/Field upgrades requiring IPDS
memory changes need to first determine what level IPDS feature
card is installed to determine which style memory media type is
required. One or two techniques can be used to determine the
    IPDS feature card level:

     1) Open the side of the printer and physically measure the length
of the IPDS/attachment card. If the card is approximately
6" to 6.5" in length, then the new media style is required and
feature codes 4040 or 4050 should be ordered. If the card is
approximately 8" in length, then the original memory features
are installed and feature codes 4304 (4 MB ASCII Memory) or
4308 (8 MB ASCII Memory) should be ordered.

    2) By printing the IPDS PRINT MENUS, the micro-code level can
be found and used to determine which IPDS memory media type
is required (MENUS/NETWORK MENU 1/TEST MENU/PRINT MENUS). The
second page that prints out, is titled IPDS - MENU SETTINGS.
Next to the "Firmware Version" you'll find some numbers that
reference the exact micro-code level. Find the first number
that has 106.XXX. If the .XXX is equal to or greater than
004, then the new media style is required and
feature codes 4040 or 4050 should be ordered. If the .XXX is
less than 004, then the original memory features
are installed and feature codes 4304 (4 MB ASCII Memory) or
4308 (8 MB ASCII Memory) should be ordered.

Disk Option: 40MB for storing PCL and PostScript resources

    (1) Since there are only two memory slots available and one is
occupied by the 4MB (Model 001) standard memory, only one
additional memory option can be installed without discarding the
    standard memory.

    (2) Since there is only one slot available, only one flash memory
option can be installed at one time.

    PRINT RESOLUTION/MEMORY REQUIREMENTS

    Memory Required in PCL5

Total installed memory required for each condition below:

Page Simplex Duplex Simplex Duplex Simplex Duplex
    Project 300 dpi 300 dpi 600 dpi 600 dpi 1200 dpi 1200 dpi
    ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- -------- --------
    ON : 4MB 4MB 4MB 4MB 12MB 12MB
    OFF : 4MB 4MB 4MB 4MB 12MB 12MB

Memory required in PostScript Level 2

Total installed memory required for each condition below:

Page Simplex Duplex Simplex Duplex Simplex Duplex
    Project 300 dpi 300 dpi 600 dpi 600 dpi 1200 dpi 1200 dpi

    ON : 4MB 4MB 4MB 4MB 12MB 12MB
    OFF : 4MB 4MB 4MB 4MB 12MB 12MB

The standard 4MB of memory will allow some 1200 dpi print jobs to print successfully. However, an additional 8MB of memory is recommended for complex print jobs and to increase the probability that most print jobs will print.

    Media Handling Notes:

    • Rough, highly textured, limp, or pre-curled papers will result in lower print quality and more frequent paper feed failures.

    • Colored papers must be able to withstand 170 deg C (338 deg F) fusing temperature.

    • Preprinted forms and letterheads should be selected using guidelines found in the printer User's Guide. The chemical process used in preprinting may render some papers unsuitable for use with the 3116 printer.

    • Unsuitable papers include multipart forms and documents; chemically treated papers; coated, synthetic and thermal papers; A5 paper less than 80 g/sqm (21 lb); recycled paper less than 75 g/sqm (20 lb); and preprinted papers requiring a high degree of registration.

    • Recycled paper less than 80 g/sqm may cause unacceptable results.

All envelopes should be new, unused, and undamaged. Envelopes with excessive curl or twist exceeding 6 mm, those stuck together, those with bent corners or nicked edges, or those that interlock should not be used.

    • Envelopes made of heavier paper may require use of the front paper exit.
    • Envelopes less than 220 mm (8.678 in) may experience print skew when fed automatically.

The following envelopes should not be used:

    • Envelopes with windows, holes, perforations, cutouts, or deep embossing
    • Envelopes with metal clasps, string ties, or metal folding bars
    • Envelopes with exposed flap adhesive when the flap is in the closed position.

For best results, printing on new 90 g/sqm (24 lb) sulfite or 25% cotton bond envelopes is recommended. Under high humidity conditions (over 65%) the envelopes may be sealed during printing.

Envelope cond less than 004, then the original memory featuresitioning to prevent wrinkling:

Special envelope conditioning hardware has been added to prevent wrinkles in certain envelopes. Without this feature, air pockets are created in the envelope pockets whenever envelopes pass through the feed rollers, especially at the very hot fuse rollers, which "irons" wrinkles into the envelope. With this conditioning feature, a solenoid opens the rollers and lets the air bubble pass through, eliminating the wrinkles. It does not degrade the printing process, regardless of the weight of the envelopes, or environmental conditions. Some slight noise is created by the solenoids, and an operator can turn this feature off if desired, to eliminate this noise. Without this envelope conditioner, wrinkling is more likely on thin (16-20 lb.) envelopes, rather that on 24-28 lb. envelopes. Wrinkling is also more likely at high humidity levels.

Envelope steady state print rate is slightly reduced because of the heavier demand toward keeping the fuser hot. After a certain number of envelopes are processed the print speed reduces by about 50%. An envelope does not pass across the fill width of the machine's fuser, therefore the portion of the fuser that is not cooled by passing the envelope will continue to heat.

    Limitations

    Memory

    • The Flash Memory options are usable only for PCL5 and PostScript resources

    • The 40 MB hard drive option is usable only for PCL5 and PostScript resources

    • The 4MB standard RAM, expandable to 64MB, is not usable for IPDS resources. The separate standard 2MB IPDS memory can be expanded to 4MB or 8MB to store IPDS resources.

    i-data 7913

The cancel key is not supported on the 3116 when attached via the i-data 7913.

    Printer Performance

The IBM 3116 Page Printer supports a maximum print rate up to 16 ppm. As is the case with most page printers in this class, performance depends on the following:

    • Interface to host (parallel or serial)
    • Host system and application
    • Complexity and content of the page and paper size
    • Available memory in the printer

The maximum print speed at 1200 dpi resolution is 8 pages per minute.

240 pel to 300 pel image/shading data conversion can cause significant decreases in performance. There is an APAR available to fix this on PSF/MVS. Please see the PSF/MVS support notes for details.

    Display attachment

When attached as an emulated device, full function of the printer is not supported. Functions such as page rotation, font selection, cpi, lpi, superscript/subscript, etc., may not be supported. Refer to the Connecting IBM Personal Printers to IBM Systems manual for attachment information.

    Print Area

The 3916 printable area is limited to within 4.2 mm (0.167in) of the top and bottom edges and to within 6.25 mm (0.25 in) of the left or right edges of the media. Any information placed outside this specified printable area will not print. For A4 paper, the information on the page is adjusted to fit 80 characters per line at 10 characters per inch.

Expanded Printable Area (XPA) will reduce the unprintable border, for IPDS and SCS applications, from an approximately existing 0.167" - 0.250" to 0.090" - 0.141". It will not provide actual "edge-to-edge" printing as implemented on the IBM 3812, 3816, 4028, and 3930 printers. XPA Function will compress the print data to fit into the printable area, eliminating data clipping/loss.

    Print Quality

During the life of the printer, components are subject to wear based on usage. Printers continuously operating at or near the maximum duty cycle may require service for replacement of these components to ensure high quality performance and printing throughout the life of the printer.

    PPDS Limitations

The 3116 supports the 4029-level PPDS commands as defined in the LaserPrinter 4029 Technical Reference with the following exceptions:

    • 600/1200 pel resolution is not supported
    • Type 1 Font Download is not supported
    • 4029 GL Mode is not supported
    • Proprinter X24 graphics are not supported

    Output Bin Full Sensing

The 3116 Model 001 does not have output bin full sensing.

    3812/3816 Compatibility

    • IPDS Fonts

The 3812/3816 font subset supports 39 fonts from the standard 3812/3816 diskette excluding the following fonts:

      • 5219 Emulation Diskette (FGIDs 41, 42, 43, 70, 71, 72)
      • 3270 DCF/GML Diskette (All fonts)
      • Katakana-Gothic 10 (FGID 44)
      • Language Group 2 and 4 Diskettes (Kateb, Yasmin, Shalom, Aviv, Barak, Narkis)
      • Language Group 3 (Languages - Arabic, Cyrillic, Greek, Hebrew, Latin 2/ROECE, Latin 5/Turkish)
      • The following standard diskette fonts supported via a bolding algorithm on the 3812/3816: FGID 38, FGID 163.

Code Page 259 has been added to support the resident Courier and Prestige 15 pitch fonts. To download fonts in the AS/400 or S/370 or S/390 environments, 300 pel host based fonts are required. You cannot download 240 pel host based fonts. If this is tried a printer resident font is substituted. Custom fonts produced with Font Manager are not supported. The appearance of the 3812/3816 fonts on this printer may be slightly different than the appearance of these fonts printed on the IBM 3812, 3816, or 3930. The 39 fonts from the standard 3812/3816 diskette that the 3116 supports (with FC 4170) are:

      • 7 Courier
      • 4 Prestige
      • 7 Sonoran Serif
      • 6 Gothic Text
      • 2 Letter Gothic
      • 3 Essay
      • 2 Boldface
      • 2 APL
      • Orator
      • Script
      • Document
      • Serif Text
      • OCR A
      • OCR B

    • SCS Fonts

SCS fonts are limited to available PCL fonts. If CPI is used to determine the font, the scalable Courier font will be used.

    • Edge-to-edge Printing

The 3812 and 3816 printers can print edge-to-edge on a page. The new 3116 printers have an unprintable border. An operator panel setting has been provided to provide a pseudo-edge-to-edge print solution. The (Expanded Print Area) option will take the page of data and scale it to fit in the printable area eliminating the clipping of data that would appear in the unprintable area. This capability exists for SCS and IPDS applications only.

    • PMP (Page Map Primitives) commands are not supported with the new 3116 printers.

    • Performance

240 pel to 300 pel image/shading data conversion can cause significant decreases in performance. This is primarily found in the S/370 environment with the printers using the IPDS features. OGL (Overlay Generation Language) generated electronic forms are prone to these scenarios. The new 3116 printers have an enhancement to eliminate this performance problem. To enable this enhancement APAR OW10903 is required for PSF/MVS 2.2, 2.1.1, 2.1.0. This is explained further in the Software Requirements Section.

    • Early Print Complete

The 3812/3816 has a printer operator setting called "Early Print Complete" which can be set on or off. This option is not available on the 3116 printers and is by default always on. This means that the printer will send an early message back to the host indicating the print job is completed while the last couple of pages are still in process. If the printer loses power at this point in time potential data loss can occur. A similar scenario exists if this option is set "On" with the 3812/3816.

    • IBM 3812 Bisync-Communications Attachment not supported.

    • IBM 3812 VM Support Program not supported.

    4028 Compatibility

    • IPDS Fonts

The same 32 IPDS resident fonts that are available on the 4028 are available on the 3116 printers that are purchased with the Standard font feature (FC 4140). The 3116 printers do not support the use of 4028 font cards for SCS or IPDS data stream applications.

    • SCS Fonts

SCS fonts are limited to available PCL fonts. If CPI is used to determine the font, the scalable Courier font will be used.

    • Edge-to-edge Printing

The newer 4028 printers can print edge-to-edge on a page.

    • Early Print Complete

The 4028 has a printer operator setting called "Early Print Complete" which can be set on or off. This option is not available on the 3116 printers and is by default always on. This means that the printer will send an early message back to the host indicating the print job is completed while the last couple of pages are still in process. If the printer loses power at this point in time potential data loss can occur. A similar scenario exists if this option is set "On" with the 4028.

    • The Toner supply cartridge on the 4028 printer and the Toner supply on the new 3116 printers are not interchangeable.

    3912/3916 Compatibility

    • IPDS Fonts

The same 32 or 35(391X RPQ) IPDS resident fonts available on the 3916 are available on the 3116 printers that purchase 4028/3912/3916 IPDS font feature (FC 4140)

    • The Toner supply cartridge on the 391X printers and the Toner supply on the new 3116 printers are not interchangeable.

    Enhanced PCL5

The IBM 3116 includes enhanced PCL5 emulation which supports the newest HP printer data stream that offers the following improvements over PCL5:

    • Extensions to support 600 dpi printing, including commands for cursor movement, character spacing, user-defined patterns, and raster graphics at 600 dpi.

    • Improvements to GL/2 mode for handling more complex curves and for including GL/2 commands in PCL macros for better user-defined forms.

    • Bi-directional parallel port communications, including new status readback commands for querying the printer's fonts, macros, memory configuration, and other status conditions. New PJL commands also provide job control and the ability to track and report job statistics.

    • 36 Intellifont** Scalable Fonts as listed earlier

    • New bi-directional application drivers supporting these Enhanced PCL5 functions

Software applications that operate with the HP LaserJet 4 Series Printer will generally operate with the 3116. Compatible with PCL5e.

    PostScript Level 2

PostScript Level 2 emulation provides the following enhancements over Level 1:

    • Level 2 uses dynamic memory management of temporary resources and objects, which allows more complex jobs to be printed with less memory

    • Level 2 provides image compression and decompression filters that greatly reduce the size of PostScript files that contain image data, resulting in faster transfer of data from the user's computer to the printer.

    • Caching of user-defined patterns and forms allows these objects to be generated once in the printer and retained, or cached, for subsequent print jobs.

    • Level 2 emulation is fully compatible with the Level 1 emulation in the 4039 and 391X printers

    • A new PostScript Level 2 emulation driver

    Personal Printer Data Stream (PPDS)

The 3116 supports 4029-level PPDS commands as defined in the LaserPrinter 4029 Technical Reference. Exceptions are as follows:

    • 600 and 1200 pel resolution not supported
    • Type 1 font download not supported
    • 4029 GL mode not supported
    • Proprinter X24 graphics not supported

No PPDS drivers are shipped with the 3116. Customers should use their currently installed 4019 or 4029 drivers.

    MarkVision

MarkVision is a new printer utility that gives the administrator of printers installed in an enterprise the ability to manage, monitor, and modify the printing environment with ease. MarkVision provides the following functions directly from the single MarkVision Window:

    • Remote Operator Panel
    • Driver Set-up both from PostScript and PCL
    • Detailed Status
    • Quick Setup that allows you to download a previously saved printer configuration to any printer on the network
    • New Windows Toolkit
    • Network Utilities

MarkVision also provides the customer with a pictorial status of the printer and alerts the customer automatically when an error condition occurs on any printer on the network.

    Network Environments supported are:

    • Novell NetWare with a Windows 3.1 Client
    • AppleTalk with a Mac Client

MarkVision provides the Remote Operator function in the following network environments:

    • IBM OS/2 LAN Server with an OS/2 Client
    • Microsoft LAN Manager with an OS/2 Client
    • Windows NT Advanced Server with a NT Client

MarkVision accomplishes these tasks by utilizing the NPA standards bi-directional communications. This is an asynchronous communications protocol that, unlike SNMP, allows the printer to communicate to the host at any time it receives a request or has an error condition that requires an alert to be sent to the host.

    Printer Toolkit

The new Printer Toolkit includes the following enhancements over the original IBM LaserPrinter 4039 Toolkit:

    • A utility for downloading PostScript language programs to an optional flash memory card or disk

    • Improved support for downloading PCL5 emulation macros

    • Support for downloading TrueType fonts

    • Status feedback to local printers when downloading resources to an optional flash memory card or disk

    • An easier to use printer commands utility

    • In the DOS Toolkit, a bi-directional remote operator panel, distinguished from MarkVision, which applies to Windows 3.1

Installing the Printer Toolkit also automatically installs the bi-directional device driver that allows the printer to communicate with your computer. If you have Windows 3.1 on your system, MarkVision is also installed with the Toolkit.

    Printer Set-up Utility

The new Printer Set-up Utility has drivers to enable the new ASCII functions of the 3112 and 3116 on the major PC software applications. Printer drivers for the following applications and operating systems are included in the new Printer Set-up Utility:

    • Windows** 3.1
    • Lotus** 1-2-3** 2.3, 2.4, 3.1, 3.4
    • Word** 5.5, 6.0
    • WordPerfect** 5.1, 6.0
    • Works** 2.0, 3.0
    • Harvard Graphics** 3.0 (PostScript Only)
    • OS/2* 1.3, 2.0, 2.1
    • WIN-OS/2 for OS/2 2.1
    • AIX*

New or updated drivers may be available. Get a current list of current printer drivers and product information by dialing the Automated Fax System (AFS) and the Bulletin Board System (BBS). See the Software Application Manual (SA40-0842) for details on the use of AFS and BBS.

    Resource Management

Emulation Detection ("emulation sniffing" or SmartSwitch), now with improved algorithms that keep the emulations active at all times. Therefore, switching is significantly faster.

Most printers, with dual emulations, reboot whenever they switch printer languages. In the process, all downloaded resources including fonts, forms, and macros are lost. The 3116 software enhancements include a single imaging model that permits PCL and PostScript resources to be saved when switching from one emulation to another. PCL and PostScript resources will also be saved when the printer switches resolutions.

CCITT Group III and Group IV Support

The 3116 software enhancements include support for the industry standard CCITT Group III and Group IV raster data compression modes in PCL5 emulation. These compression modes provide a much higher compression ratio than the four existing HP modes (run-length encoding, TIFF, delta-row compression, adaptive compression). Performance on complex PCL raster image print jobs can be improved via use of the CCITT Group III or Group IV compression modes.

    • Shaded Area Printing

The 3116 IPDS support includes a newly-architected image capability that significantly improves throughput for electronic overlays that contain shaded areas. This new feature provides an IOCA capability equivalent to the IM1 image cell used by most overlay generators for creating shaded areas. Now PSF can translate 240 dpi shading cells directly into resolution-independent IOCA. This means PSF can send the 3116 a single small cell to represent an entire shaded area, rather than expanding the cell to fill the area before sending it to the 3116. The result, for overlays with large or wide-spread shaded areas, is less processing and less storage required by PSF, as well as significantly less transmission time across communication lines. This also means a decrease in the transmission size for raster images formatted in tiles or cells by products such as GDDM. For some complex images there may be an increase in printer processing time, since now the image tiles will be assembled in the printer instead of in PSF software.

      This function requires APAR OW10903 for PSF/MVS 2.2, 2.1.1, and 2.1.0.

    SCS Data Stream Font Mapping

The 3116 with the Coax or Twinax Interface, uses PCL fonts when operating with a non-IPDS host data stream. The printer selects and uses these PCL fonts differently depending upon whether the attachment is coaxial or twinaxial. With the coaxial attachment, fonts can only be selected by specifying characters-per-inch (CPI). With the twinaxial attachment, fonts can be selected by specifying either CPI or an FGID (Font Global Identifier).

For selection by CPI, the printer uses the scalable Courier fonts.

AS/400 programs can use FGIDs to specify non-IPDS fonts. Based upon and FGID request the printer uses various font characteristics to select substitute fonts. The 3116 substitutes Courier, Letter Gothic, CG Times, Times New Roman, and Univers typefaces for AS/400 requested non-IPDS fonts based on FGID requests. PCL font cards can also be mapped for non-IPDS usage. The font card must support Symbol Set PC 850 and have the correct fonts to be considered in the font substitution process. Please see the Font Reference for Coaxial and Twinaxial Features (S544-5270) for more details.

Note: The 3116 requires a font card adapter to use font cards.

    Expanded Printable Area

The IBM 3116 includes the function to expand printable area when the Coaxial or Twinaxial Interface features are installed. The Expanded Printable Area (XPA) function provides a solution to customers requiring "Edge-to-Edge" printing, i.e. capability on 4028, 3812, 3816, or 3930. The 3116, under XPA, has a reduced but not eliminated unprintable border. The unprintable border size is reduced approximately from an existing 0.167" - 0.250" to 0.090" - 0.141". The page of data is slightly scaled down to fit within the new expanded print area. This provides a pseudo edge-to-edge print solution by providing all data to print on the page eliminating data clipping and/or loss. An example of this is the capability to print on portrait page 66 lines at 6 line per inch and 85 characters of text horizontally across the page at 10 CPI.

    Additional data and consideration:

    • The XPA function is selectable only on the operator panel.
    • The data is scaled down approximately 2%
    • PCL and PostScript applications are not supported
    • Only Letter, Legal and A4 paper sizes are recommended
    • Applications requiring this function that contain OCR data for scanning, should be tested for readability
    • Usage on pre-printed forms should be tested to assure data placement accuracy is maintained

    4MB IPDS Memory Upgrade (6) 4040
    8MB IPDS Memory Upgrade (6) 4050
    1. There are only two memory slots available and one is occupied by 4MB (Model 001) standard memory.

    2. Since there is only one slot available, only one flash memory option can be installed at one time. Flash memory is usable only for PCL and PostScript resources.

    3. Since there is only one second drawer position, only one of F/C #4501 and #4502 can be installed at one time.

    4. One of the coaxial or twinaxial interface features must be ordered with each 3116 printer. These features are no charge with initial printer purchase.

    5. Only one IPDS feature can be installed at one time. Order FC 4140 for Standard 4028/3912/3916 font compatibility. Order IPDS with 3812/3816 font subset (FC 4170) only for applications that require 3812/3816 printer resident fonts. Please see Software Requirements for font limitations.

    6. There is one IPDS memory slot available with the IPDS feature. When the IPDS feature is ordered, it comes with 2 MB of memory standard. This memory can be increased by ordering a 4 MB or 8 MB option. A change to the physical memory media type used on the IPDS feature was phased in around the Jan/96 time frame. New machine orders requiring additional IPDS memory should use Feature Code 4040 or 4050. MES/Field upgrades requiring IPDS memory changes need to first determine what level IPDS feature card is installed to determine which style memory media type is required. One or two techniques can be used to determine the IPDS feature card level:
      1. Open the side of the printer and physically measure the length of the IPDS/attachment card. If the card is approximately 6" to 6.5" in length, then the new media style is required and feature codes 4040 or 4050 should be ordered. If the card is approximately 8" in length, then the original memory features are installed and feature codes 4304 (4 MB ASCII Memory) or 4308 (8 MB ASCII Memory) should be ordered.
      2. By printing the IPDS PRINT MENUS, the micro-code level can be found and used to determine which IPDS memory media type is required (MENUS/NETWORK MENU 1/TEST MENU/PRINT MENUS). The second page that prints out, is titled IPDS - MENU SETTINGS. Next to the "Firmware Version" you'll find some numbers that reference the exact micro-code level. Find the first number that has 106.XXX. If the .XXX is equal to or greater than 004, then the new media style is required and feature codes 4040 or 4050 should be ordered. If the .XXX is less than 004, then the original memory features are installed and feature codes 4304 (4 MB ASCII Memory) or 4308 (8 MB ASCII Memory) should be ordered.

    • IPDS Memory Options (#4040, #4050)

Most applications running today on 4028s, 3812s, 3816s, and 3930s should also run on an IBM 3116 with the standard 2 MB of IPDS memory. An estimate of required memory size can be calculated by accumulating the host (S/370-S/390 or AS/400) font, page segment, and overlay space requirements. If all resources for the print job exceed the standard 2 MB of IPDS memory, there is the possibility of performance improvement with the addition of more IPDS memory. If all the resources for one page of the print job were to exceed the IPDS memory capacity then additional IPDS memory is mandatory. These features are factory install with initial order. MES orders are Customer Set-up.

    Customer Replacement Parts

    200,000 Page Usage Kit

Every 200,000 pages (impressions) the customer must purchase a Usage Kit to be installed by IBM. The fee for the "Usage Kit" is a usage charge and therefore not covered by IBM Warranty or IBM Maintenance.

The Usage Kit replacements should be made after each 200K impressions by a customer engineer. The 3116 will display a message at the appropriate time but this message will not require an immediate kit installation and will not prevent the printer from operating. The message will continue to be posted each time the 3116 is powered-up until the kit is installed.

The customer will need to order the kit and have it available for the customer engineer to replace. The kit is available from IBM by calling toll free in the U.S. 1-800-346-3939 and ordering part number 69G5264 (Low Voltage Machine) or 69G5265 (High Voltage Machine).

The kit will be shipped and billed directly to the customer.

The kit contains a replacement fuser assembly, a transfer roller assembly, a paper feed D-roller assembly , and a lower redrive roller shaft assembly.

The approximate average yields are not a warranty or guarantee of minimum life, and are provided to assist in initial supplies planning. Actual usage should be used to establish the supply's life in the end user's application. Many factors (for example, print coverage per page, paper type and size, and environmental conditions) can effect supply life.
